Running With Scissors
The Roadhouse, Birmingham
March 19th 2013

rwsIt’s a Tuesday night and we’re in Birmingham at The Roadhouse for what we hope will be a great night of rock!

It’s our first time at The Roadhouse and we have to say we’re impressed with the venue. Tucked away in south Brum, this hard rock hideaway oozes music from it’s every pore. And after paing a trip to the delightful ‘Jimmy’s café and grill’ (which we highly recommend!), it’s time to hit the music!

First up are young, Redditch-based 4 piece, Running with Scissors.

The guys hit the stage and immediately get into it. Belting out their own track ‘Don’t disturb the neighbours’. The track is punkalicious number, and the lead vocalist/bassist starts to really perform. The drums are hot, and the vocals are raw. There’s a great energy about these guys, and the first track is a good one!

However, it’s the last of their original material for the evening and we swiftly move into a display of ‘Running With Scissors’ clear influences. Starting with Blink 182’s ‘Up All Night’. The play is tight and the guys dish out a great version of the track.

They then deal out another tight cover of The Hives’ ‘Hate to say I told you so’. A classic track and these boys really do it justice. This is the first time we hear any backing vocals and it adds a dimension to the band’s play and sound.

And after another good cover in the form of ‘Brain Stew’ by Green Day, the guys really come into their own in the performance. You can feel the confidence building and the crowd start to eat up their set!

Running With Scissors treat us to another Blink 182 offering in ‘Dammit’, including a nice little ‘No Scrubs’ mash-up for good measure. Nice tight little addition. Good stuff.

Finally finishing on Buzzcocks classic ‘Ever fallen in love…’ (via Green Day’s American Idiot), bringing in some decent harmonies, and maintaining their excellent level of play.

It’s a good finish to a solid set. The only thing we were left craving was some more original material.
Their own track was a highlight of the set. These guys proved they can play, they also gave us a taster of what they can do, so the future is an interesting one for Running With Scissors, and the sooner they can get some more of their own stuff, the sooner we will be back out to see them!

All in all a good performance from these young up-and-comers.

Jaytee says;
These guys show a great deal of promise. They can clearly play, and their first track gave us a taster of what we hoped would be a punk-filled set of original material. It wasn’t to be, but I’m looking forward to seeing how these guys come along!

Jannetty says;
I always think a set should be top heavy with original songs. Saw a glimpse of what this band are capable of with a strong opener. Need to see less covers, more originals next time lads as you have real potential…
